A wine that carries on a legacy
Mukhattskaro — a place where history lives on in the wine
Just a few minutes’ drive from Tbilisi, amidst the beautiful surroundings of Mukhattskaro, lies our family winery: Ampelos Jus.
To us, this place is more than just a winery; it is a place where the land, history, and wine continue their dialogue, even after centuries.
Ancient Qvevris
Ancient *qvevris* (traditional Georgian clay vessels) discovered within the winery and on the grounds reveal the site's deep-rooted winemaking heritage. Some of these vessels are estimated to date back to the 5th century.
Upon first seeing these ancient vessels, we realized we were doing more than simply building a new winery—we were continuing a tradition with centuries of history on this very land.
The Qvevri: Bridging Past and Future
Georgia is considered one of the ancient birthplaces of wine. For millennia, our ancestors have crafted wine in *qvevris*—clay vessels buried in the earth that impart a unique character to the wine. At Ampelos Jus, we aim to carry on this very tradition.
We vinify various Georgian grape varieties separately in *qvevris* (traditional clay vessels), striving to preserve the natural character of the grapes and the unique qualities of the terroir where they were grown.
For us, the *qvevri* is more than just a wine vessel.
It is a bridge between the past and the future.
